PIAC lauded for its effort at tracking oil funded projects 

The District Co-ordinating Director for Asunafo North, Mohammed Alhassan has lauded the Public Interests and Accountability Committee also known as - PIAC for its efforts at tracking oil funded projects in the country. 

He said initially, when Ghana started production of oil in commercial quantities there were two schools of thought.

One was optimistic that the discovery was going to bring development while the other was of the view that it was going to bring confusion and destruction. 

Mr. Alhassan said it was therefore timely that the Petroleum Revenue Management Act was brought in to ensure the disbursement of oil revenue. 

Mr. Alhassan was speaking at a public forum organised by PIAC, at Goaso in the Asunafo North Municipality. 

PIAC as part of its mandate is holding these fora to account to the citizenry its findings after monitoring oil revenue funded projects and to take feedback from the people.  

Mr. Alhassan who spoke on behalf of the Municipal Chief Executive for Asunafo North said the Municipality has so far benefited from oil revenue funded projects through the construction of a girls dormitory at Mim Senior High School and some Mim town roads.

The Chairman of PIAC, Dr. Steve Manteaw, took the participants through the mandate of PIAC and how oil revenues were used. 

He said through its monitoring exercises since 2016, some of the committee's findings are that some projects were non-existent while others were poorly executed, yet the contractors were paid which is a drain on the government's purse. 

Dr. Manteaw however said PIAC has made its recommendations to the Attorney General's office and hopes action will be taken as soon as possible. 

A participant, Samuel Takyi told GBC’s Radio Ghana that he is happy that Education has been captured as a priority area because to him Education does it all. 

He lauded PIAC for its untiring efforts at tracking oil revenue funded projects.
