Ghana marks 17th anniversary of May 9 Accra stadium disaster 

Ghana will be commemorating the 17th anniversary of the May 9 Accra Sports stadium disaster today.

Over 126 soccer fans lost their lives in a stampede which occurred when Hearts of Oak clashed with Asante Kotoko at the Accra Stadium in 2001.

It has been described as Africa's worst soccer disaster.

The Ghana FA in a statement on Wednesday said, “Today is a day of sadness and grief as we once again remember the incident that led to 127 football fans losing their lives following a stampede during a Premier League match.” 

“Let us constantly remind ourselves that never again should such a tragedy befall our beautiful game and our beloved nation. May the souls of our departed football enthusiasts rest in perfect peace,” the statement added.

Kotoko fans threw plastic seats and bottles onto the pitch after Hearts struck late to beat them 2-1 in a Ghana Premier League game.

Police fired into the crowd which caused panic and resulted in a stampede which saw over 126 passionate soccer fans perish.
