Journalists undergo advocacy trainning

Journalists from the Northern, Upper East and Upper West Regions, are undergoing training to build capacity and sharpen their skills on advocacy journalism. 

The two day seminar organized by SEND Ghana with funding from the World Bank, has the objective of building the capacity of journalists, to use their media platforms to advocate for social accountability. 

The Team Leader for SEND Ghana in the Northern Region, Mohammed Mumuni in his presentation, said SEND Ghana has for the last three years, worked to get citizens to actively participate in decision making, contribute to the budgeting process and demand accountability from duty bearers. 

He said the media play a critical role in demanding accountability and amplifying the concerns of citizens, and therefore building their capacity to play their roles better will go a long way to deepen democracy and improve governance. 

A media expert and former Executive Director of the Media Foundation for West Africa, Professor Kwame Karikari, who is facilitating the workshop challenged journalists to use their media platforms to raise awareness on social accountability. 

He observed that, access to parliamentarians has become increasingly difficult as MPs hardly respond to letters and calls from their constituents and therefore media houses have a larger role to play to fill the gap.
