Government To Procure Thousands Of Mono Desks, Beds To Solve Challenges In SHS

President Akufo-Addo, has reiterated government's commitment to resolve the challenges hindering the smooth delivery of the free SHS policy. 

According to him, the procurement process to award contracts for the provision of some 69,000 mono desks and 13,000 bunk beds is currently on-going.

The contracts will also see the provision of furniture for dining halls, staff rooms of teachers, computer laboratories, and marker boards for classrooms. 

President Akufo-Addo, who announced this at the 60th anniversary and Speech and Prize giving day of the Pope John SHS and Minor Seminary in Koforidua cautioned headteachers against charging illegal or unapproved fees as they will be sanctioned.

Pope John Senior High School and minor seminary was established in 1958 as ''St. John's Seminary and college'' with only 45 students. St. John’s Seminary and College operated as a private Catholic Institution for ten years. 

 The school was later absorbed by government and renamed Pope John Secondary School and Junior Seminary. 

The anniversary was on the theme: ''Transformational Leadership- 60 Years of Academic Excellence,'' and it brought together people from the academia, the clergy, traditional Authority, government, as well as old students of the school. 

President Akufo-Addo said Pope John is one of the finest Senior High Schools that has contributed significantly to the development of the country.

 He applauded the efforts of some old boys including the Metropolitan Catholic Arch Bishop of Accra, Most Rev. Charles Palmer Buckle, Deputy Information Minister Kwadwo Oppong Nkrumah among others.

President Akufo-Addo said education is the key to national development as it can help produce competent human resource that can fit into the global competitive market. 

He said government will provide the requisite equipment and environment for teaching and learning.

He however advised the students to strife to achieve excellence in their education.
He also asked them to be dedicated, discipline, and determined to contribute their quota to national development. He said all have a significant role to play to make Ghana a better place. 

The Headmistress of the school, Mrs Benedicta Cabilba Foli in her address, highlighted the importance of quality education in the accelerated development of every nation. 

She indicated that the school has seen much infrastructural development over the years which include the construction of dormitories as well as other school blocks.

The PTA, she noted, is putting up a 12 unit block out of which six have been completed and being occupied by teachers.

The Head perfect of the school, Franklin Amo, called on government and benevolent organisations to come to their aid by completing the school's Assembly Hall project which has come to a standstill. 

Awards were presented to deserving students, teaching and non-teaching staff who have contributed to the success story of the school.
