Ghana joins global community to mark World Teachers' Day

October 5 is being marked by the global community as World Teachers' Day. 

The UN has dedicated this year's celebration to showcase and discuss progress and challenges in higher education such as institutional autonomy, academic freedom, and professional development.
 
This year's celebration also commemorates the 20th Anniversary of the 1997 UNESCO Recommendation that borders on Teaching Personnel in higher education.
 
The UN believes teaching personnel in institutions of higher education are often overlooked in discussions concerning the status of teachers.

World Teachers’ Day is celebrated annually and brings together governments, multi- and bilateral organisations, NGOs, private sector organizations, teachers and experts in the field of teaching. 

The occasion marks the achievements and reflects on ways to counter the challenges in the teaching profession such as shortage of teachers.

An International Conference will take place at UNESCO’s Headquarters in Paris to mark the DAY.

In Ghana, the National Best Teachers Awards will be held at Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

Thirty nine Teachers who have distinguished themselves will be honoured at the Event.

Meanwhile, some have advised that the Teachers Awards should not be limited to the national level, but Regional Best Teachers should also be honoured to motivate teachers to give off their best.
