Former Black Stars defender, Anthony Baffoe wins Sports Personality Of The Year 


Former Black Stars defender, Anthony Baffoe, was named Sports Writers Association of Ghana’s Sports Personality of the year at the 42nd MTN SWAG Awards held at the Banquet Hall of the State House on Saturday. 

Tony Baffoe’s efforts in putting together the Professional Players Association of Ghana (PFAG) as well his work for FIFA as a General Coordinator for several matches and tournaments could not have been overlooked. 

His award also came by virtue of his role in developing football in Ghana. 

The event was attended by several high-profile personalities including the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who gave the keynote address. 

He commended SWAG for their work in promoting sports across the years. 

President Akufo-Addo said his government will draw up a policy to help support sports men and women who are in their retirement. 

Apart from Baffoe, javelin thrower, John Ampomah and triple jumper, Nadia Eke, were named Male and Female Athlete of the year respectively. 

Wa All Stars was the football club of the year for capturing the Ghana Premier League title in 2016 and Abdul Wahid Omar was the Amateur Boxer of the Year. 

Emmanuel “Game Boy” Tagoe was the Professional Boxer of the year. 

Association Chairman and President of the year went to Ben Nunoo Mensah while Roger Barnor recieved Referee of the year ward. 

Wa All Stars and Black Stars goalkeeper, Richard Ofori, was the Premier League of the year, Solomon Asante was Male Footballer of the year and Priscilla Adubea was Female Footballer of the year.
 
Most Promising Star of the year went to Sandra Owusu Ansah. 

She excelled in her outings for both the Women’s U17 and U20 national teams in 2016. 

McDan Group Of Companies and Twellium Industries Ghana Limited were given corporate awards for their work in supporting sports in the country.
