Fall armyworm ‘threatens maize production’ in Ashanti 

Experts are predicting a minimum of 15% reduction in maize production in the Ashanti region this year as a result of the attack on the maize farms by the fall armyworms. 

Report available to the Ashanti Regional directorate of Agriculture indicate that Ejura-Sekyedumase municipality and Sekyere Afram Plains district which are known to be major food producing areas in the region are among the worst affected districts.

The Ashanti Regional Director of Agric, Joseph Faalong, disclosed this during an interview with our Regional Correspondent, Nicholas Osei-Wusu, in Kumasi.

He noted that already, some of the badly attacked farms are being cleared of the infested maize.

Touching on the control measures, Mr. Faalong disclosed that the Ashanti region has received about 26 thousand assorted agro chemicals in excess of the acreage of the affected farms for the management of the pests.
