SPECIAL PROSECUTOR SHOULD FISH OUT ALL PAST CORRUPT OFFICIALS – ASANI TANO

A member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) Yaw Asani Tano has stated that the Special Prosecutor should not only concentrate on immediate past corrupt officials but should reach into the past and deal with all those who have committed various crimes in the future. 

He said: “it does not matter whether the person is deceased or whatever. The person still has properties. We can seize them. Those people must be prosecuted and jailed.” He stated.

Mr. Asani Tano was speaking on the Uniiq Breakfast Drive (UBD) on Thursday.

“We should start from when they gave the mandate to the Auditor General to come out with people who have been found culpable and deal with them.” Mr. Asani Tano demanded. 

He said the work of the Special Prosecutor will not be complete if people who milked the country in one way or the other in the past are not brought to book.

Mr. Asani Tano cited cases of those who were imprisoned in the past in relation to crimes and said they paid for their crimes. 

He mentioned Victor Selormey among others who died because of prison conditions that worsened his health condition and asked why others should be allowed to go scot free after paying back what they took from the state.

Mr. Asani Tano also asked what happened to Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings when she, through the 31st December Movement acquired state properties through divestiture in what he believes amount to conflict of interest.

According to Mr. Asani Tano, in the days of the first President Kwame Nkrumah, you cannot talk about the issue of ten per cent because you will be exposed as being corrupt.
 
Yet it has become the order of the day. He said Nkrumah ensured that we got value for money and changed the psyche of the Black race. He would not want all efforts to go down into the drain after the establishment of the Special Prosecutor’s office.

For his part, the District Chief Executive of Awutu Senya East Yaw Assumang Mensah said he loves the consistency of the President’s commitment to fighting corruption. 

“The consistency of his commitment gives me a certain assurance of that there is a new chapter in the development of this nation.” He added. 

Citing the President’s statement that no one in his regime was going to make money using his office, he said the president was living up to his promise. 

Mr. Assumang Mensah was of the opinion that those who embezzle state funds should not just be made to pay back but should face the full rigours of the law.
