Committee set up to look into bonding of Nurses

The Ministry of Health says it is still at the discussion stages on whether to continue bonding nurses or not.
 
It is therefore asking the public not to panic as government will take the best decision to favour all parties. 

Speaking on GBC’s ‘Behind the News’, the PRO of the Ministry, Robert Cudjoe said the issue is still at the policy stage.
 
He said a committee has been formed to look into the issue and come out with concrete solutions that will be beneficial to both the students and the country.

Meanwhile, Dr Elias Sory also says there is the need to bring experts together to holistically look at the issue of bonding student nurses. 

According to Dr. Sory bonding was introduced to fill vacant places at health facilities and control the rate at which nurses leave the country. 

Speaking on Behind the News, Dr. Sory said the issue of vacant health centres is still a major issue, therefore the outright withdrawal of bonding will not augur well for the country. 

In a related development, the President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, Kwaku Asante Krobea says there is a huge deficit in the number of Nurses as against patients that turn up daily at the health centres.
 
He said it is necessary for government to recruit more graduate nurses because there is no guarantee of readymade jobs for them if they are left to look for their own employment. 

Mr. Asante Krobea was reacting to a recent decision by Government not to bond graduate nurses anymore.
 
He called for government to review its recruitment policy to address the employment of nurses.
