May Day clashes in Paris as tense election looms

Trade Unionists and protesters have gathered in the French capital to mark May Day.

As the second round of a divisive French presidential election looms unions want the anti-Le Pen vote to turnout in force.

Jean Claude Mailly is from the Force Ouvriere union:“I think that a clear instruction of who to vote for in the second round is necessary because we have to block Marine Le Pen, we all agree about that. We must also prevent a further increase in the vote going to Le Pen, that would prove costly in future.”

In a febrile atmosphere the annual event turned ugly as police, protesters and National Front supporters on the periphery of the march engaged in running clashes, three police have been injured and a number of arrests made.
