Ghana Police suspends vehicle document checks

The Ghana Police Service has suspended the checking of driver’s license and other vehicle documents in the country.

According to the Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Cephas Arthur, the police will concentrate their efforts in regulating traffic flow in most congested parts of the country. 

He however, added that routine crime checks will remain in force. 

Explaining the necessity for the new directive on an Accra-based radio, Joy FM he said "It is about the demands of the time. We realised that the concern now is about the traffic congestion in our cities and towns. We want to focus our attention on traffic in order to create a more congenial atmosphere for commuters in our cities and towns, therefore personnel on highway patrol are to limit their operations to inspection of cars for drugs and ammunitions only.”

“We also realised the attention or focus (on vehicle checking) is too much on documentation which is not so much a matter of concern to Ghanaians, adding that the directive will be in force until further notice and will be reviewed as and when it matters.” He further explained 

He said all police units are barred from doing motor checks.
