Armah crowned Djarbeng Top -8 champion


Seventh placed national tennis star Bernard Ashitey Armaah captured his first tennis title as he defeated Daniel Quartey with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 win  in the finals of the Douglas Djarbeng Top-8 hitter competition at the Accra Tennis Club Court last Friday.

The 22-year-old lifted his first gold medal in the five-day tourney following his victories over  Isaac Dapaah and Joshua Annan in the preliminaries and semi-final stages before easing past Quartey in the finals.

Both hitters sustained an endearing display in the preliminaries but Armaah with an improved performance stood at the end of the event.

He went home with GH1, 000, a trophy and 14 strings for his sterling performance displayed throughout the championship.

Quartey who sustained an injury in the course of the final, received a cash prize of GH 650 a trophy and 10 strings.

Benjamin Palm who placed third after defeating Isaac Dapaah 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 received GH 350 and the remaining participants also walked away with cash prizes for taking part in the challenge.

The championship organizer Lawyer Douglas Djarbeng congratulated the winner and all participants for showing up on the court to have a successful tennis championship and added that, the championship was to offer an opportunity to the hitters to exhibit their talent.

Lawyer Djarbeng also commended the club members for their immerse support for the contest and hope the competition remains an annual event for the hitters to have a brighter future in their tennis career.

Armaah, said that, he did not expect to win the title for the first time "but with hard work I was able to carry the day.

Quartey is a great hitter with great power and mindset. His servings are very difficult to receive but with my little experience, I was able to hold him in the first set and relaxed for him in the second so that I can kill the game in the last set which I succeeded in doing’’ He said.
