South Sudan to receive US$21m in emergency funding


Some US$21 million will be allocated by a UN emergency response fund to provide urgent humanitarian assistance to people in South Sudan, the UN Secretary-General announced on Thursday.

Speaking during a visit to the African country, Ban Ki-moon said the protracted conflict and the worsening food insecurity there have resulted in the need for life-saving assistance.

Approximately US$15 million will go towards assisting more than 250,000 people affected by conflict, many of whom are in areas that can only be reached by road.

Access is expected to be restricted when the rainy season begins at the end of April.
