Gender Ministry says child marriage will end in Ghana

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has expressed optimism that child marriage will end in Ghana. 

The Technical Advisor on Gender at the Ministry, Dinah Adiko, however said it will take quite some time to end the practice. 

Speaking on our current affairs programme, “Focus,” Madam Adiko said teenage pregnancy and poverty are the leading causes of child marriage in Ghana. 

According to her, though young boys are also involved, child marriage is a predominantly girls affair. 

The Executive Director of Child Rights International, Bright Appiah said government must put in place policies to deal with the practice. 

Meanwhile, Legal Practitioner, Victor Adawudu has urged the media to protect the identity of children caught up in rape, cybercrime and child trafficking. 

He told Radio Ghana that media reportage on this issue is not the best and media can do better.
