NHIS still effective in Eastern Region - Director

The National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, has not collapsed rather it is functioning and getting stronger.

The Eastern Regional Director of the NHIA, Alhaji Seidu Sampson Abudu said this when he addressed some critical issues concerning the scheme in an interview with GBC’s Radio Ghana in Koforidua. 

He said the state of the scheme in the Region is solid as more people are queuing up at the various district offices on daily basis to either enroll onto the scheme or renew their cards. 

Providers are also rendering services at the various facilities around the region. 

He therefore does not see the need for people to queue up for several hours if it is not working. 

Alhaji Abudu also disclosed that the region exceeded its enrolment target for 2015 of nearly one point one million by over 86 thousand, representing nearly eight percentage increase. 

The NHIS, he noted, also exceeded its targets in the various membership categories such as the Indigenes registration, school enrolment and special registration.

There was however a shortfall in premium mobilisation. This, he said, confirms that the scheme is still strong and firmly operating.
