NMC Justifies Re-Introduction Of TV Licence Fee

The Executive Secretary of the National Media Commission, George Sarpong has justified the reintroduction of TV License fees.  

He said when the Constitution enjoined the media to hold public office holders accountable, the idea was to  have a media sector that is adjunct to no power. 

He said this is possible when the citizenry fund the media. 

He was speaking at a news conference in Accra. 

Collection of TV license will resume next month.  

The revised license fee will see domestic TV users of one television set pay 36 Ghana cedis annually and two TV sets or more pay 60 Ghana cedis. Commercial licensed users will pay three Ghana cedis per TV set which is 36 Ghana cedis a year.  

Repairers will pay 20 Ghana cedis while retailers pay 60 Ghana cedis monthly. All sales outlets will pay five cedis and 20 cedis monthly.
The Director General of GBC, Major Albert Don Chebe noted that the collection of TV license has nothing to do with content.  

He said the law states that you get a license before one can own a TV set.
