UN Security Council offers "all of its support" to Haiti


The UN Security Council offers all of the support it can to Haiti to ensure that elections take place in 2015, according to the US Permanent Representative to the organization.

Ambassador Samantha Power was on Saturday in the Caribbean nation with other members of the Security Council on a three-day mission.

The trip is taking place in the midst of a political crisis resulting from the failure to reach agreement on the holding of overdue municipal and parliamentary elections.

Ambassador Power said the UN has stood with the Haitian people through good times and bad.

The democratic contract between the government and the governed is a critical part of Haiti's development, and we on the Security Council want to offer Haiti all of the support we can to ensure that elections take place as they need to in 2015, and to ensure that all Haitians are invested in the democracy and in the economy and in the development of this rich country.

Ambassador Cristián Barros Melet of Chile, who co-led the mission with Ms Power, noted that Security Council members had an interesting meeting with Haitian President Michel Martelly.

He said views about the different perspectives on the situation in the country were exchanged.
