Ban's envoy for West Africa holds peace talks with Gambian leader

UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon's special representative for West Africa, Mohammed Ibn Chambas arrived in Banjul yesterday and held peace talks with the Gambian President, Yahya Jammeh.

The bilateral discussion focused on the recent military coup attempt and how to bring lasting peace to the country which has been facing series of military coups in recent years.

The UN envoy explained that his Banjul visit was part of the consultation requested to be undertaken on behalf of the Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon on a number of issues affecting the stability in the Gambia.

Mr Chambas will have final discussions with the Gambian leader today, and the outcome will be conveyed to the UN Secretary-General.
