US Ambassador to Ghana calls on Minister for Power

The US Ambassador to Ghana, Gene Cretz, has paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Power, Dr. Kwabena Donkor.

The visit was to formally introduce himself to the new minister and to also communicate US’s readiness to support the newly created Ministry. 

Welcoming the Ambassador and his team, Dr. Donkor underscored the importance of reliable power supply to Ghanaians. He acknowledged the current supply deficit in electricity generation and its effect on industries. 

He said the country is currently facing a power deficit of about 500 megawatts and this does not take into consideration the required reserve margin of about 300 megawatts. 

The minister lauded the US government for its support in solving the power challenges. He appealed to the Ambassador to assist in the areas of capacity building and coal-fired power generation. 

For his part, Mr. Cretz, pledged his support to the new ministry and re-emphasized the willingness of the US government to partner Ghana for sustainable development as demonstrated by initiatives such as the partnership for growth and Compact Two. 

He indicated a team will be sent to the ministry to assess details for possible assistance.
